Really interesting article, especially for someone like me who both loves music and fragrances ! Would be curious to hear your thoughts on fragrance brands like Liquid Sound and Øthers that both put music at the center of their brand story.

Thanks for your comment!

I have read some news about Liquid Sound. It is conceptually interesting, but as I see fragrance creation as a form of art, I can't support the replacement of perfumers with generative AI, much like I would not purchase generative AI artwork. Cost reduction shouldn't be a primary focus in art and creation, IMO, and ultimately $150-200 for 50ml isn't really any cheaper (granted, for a pseudo-custom fragrance it is on the cheaper side).

As far as other brands, I'm actually in the process of getting my nose on Zernell Gille's line of music genre inspired fragrances. I've already tried Jazz, and have the rest of the line on my to-try list. Was actually planning on doing a special feature on the house at some point in the future (regardless of whether I like them or not personally, I appreciate what he is exploring as a full line). There are plenty of other music-inspired fragrances as well, whether they be one-off offerings or a series, or something like the 'Extrait de Musique' collection from Filippo Sorcinelli that explore the organ, or 'Bowmakers' from DS and Durga. They aren't directly music-inspired, but the association with musical instruments definitely conjures sound to mind. I'm working on compiling a list of music inspired or related fragrances as I find them!

That being said, I also like the idea of taking fragrances with no explicit connection to music and imagining what sounds they conjure for me. It's sort of like the difference in having a plate explaining the 'meaning/concept' of a painting from an artist versus blindly exploring how the work impacts you personally, without any leading text. Both are worth exploring!

AI can mean different things to different people. For me, it's a fascinating new tool for perfumers to work with, similar to how headspace technology revolutionized the way we capture and recreate natural scents. Perfumery has always been this beautiful balance between artistry and science so when new tools emerge, they don't replace the perfumer's creativity, they enhance it. I believe AI will be just that, another tool in the perfumer's toolkit.

I'm excited to read your reviews, fragrance and music are so wonderfully intertwined and I love how you explore these multi-sensory experiences!

This was a very fun read. Love it when people take the time to thoughtfully pair fragrance with other rad things. Can’t wait for the next in the series!

Thanks! The intersection of various sensory-driven art forms is very interesting to me. It's a bit like the difference between a snapshot and a film - things become more three dimensional, more visceral, when enjoyed together. Looking forward to exploring this more moving forward, myself!
